Original publisher's blue cloth decorative blocked boards with gilt titles to spine. 230 x 150 mm approx. Original End papers with publisher's adverts. viii + 594 pp + 2 folding plates at end. Frontis + numerous unspecified plates, figs, diags. and tables in text. The book was dis -bound when bought by us but worthy of restoration despite faults mentioned under, due to it's prior ownership.It was Sir Francis Leopold McClintock's copy and bears his signature and date Feb 1855 to the title page. Other p.o.n. (later but 19th C.) under and same to prelim and rear blank. This famed Irish Explorer, Gentleman Volunteer, and later Admiral Royal Navy and Knight Commander of the Order of Bath, discovered the fate of the Franklin Expedition in1859 on King William Island. Poor (Book- moderate shelf wear and soiling to boards. Book block re- backed with new mull and backing paper and re-cased in the original boards retaining the publisher's end papers. Sadly it was discovered in collating the book prior to re backing that 0ne leaf of appendix (E) and appendices (F), (G), (H) & (I) have been removed being pp 595 to 631.[Conway Maritime did a reprint of this work in the 1980's for a purchaser wishing to have a reading copy] There is also fore edge rubbing to some pages, general marginal soiling and occassional foxing.
