Original Decorative Cloth Boards with gilt titles to spine.Undated per copac. 175 x 115 mm approx. Vol I [iv] + 352 pp Vol II [vi] + 386pp. Copious line illustrations. Charles Townley whose collection of marbles forms the basis of the work was born in Townley Lancs in 1737 and was a Trustee of the Museum. He had intended to have a library and statute gallery built at his mansion in Townley to house the collection but in declining health charged his successors to complete his plan in 5 years or it would be given to the British public and preserved in the museum. The rest is history. The work in two volumes is effectively a very detailed pocket guide to the contents of the gallery. Very Good (Books - shelf wear and fading to cloth commensurate with age. They have been re-backed by us with new mull and endpapers applied and the original cloth spines laid on the new cloth). Previous owner name in ink to title page of both vols. and a few foxing spots to prelims. No other notable defects). Please see our images of the actual set offered for sale.
