Christmas Issue of a publication of The Church Extension Association a Christian charitable organisation founded to help the poor and which in addition to supporting work houses and food missions for the poor in London also operated two orphanages/ convalescent homes in St Annes Lancs and Broadstairs in Kent where by public support looked after between 600 and 700 orphans. The annual contains articles about the organisation as well as stories promoting christian values etc. Another interesting feature are the many contemporary adverts from commercial sponsors. Good - prize insc for reciting a chapter of the bible Christmas 1892 to obverse of frontis. Rubbing /damage to paper covered spine near tail but surprisingly sound and complete for age. Also includes Articles of Religion, Ratification and Table of Kindred and Affinity. Undated - 1855 by reference to table of the moveable feasts calendar. Good (Book - Light general shelf wear/scuffing to leather, previous owner name and date in ink to front free end paper. A few mild foxing spots to end papers and blanks. Top margin of approx 20 leaves have sustained a little damage typical of being struck by the edge of a rule. Not apparent when book closed and not particularly detracting but worthy of mention. Buff Card flap folder with black printed titles and explanatory text to reverse containing 14 postcard size sepia photographic views in a concertina fold out strip. Dated from 1906 to 1931 and showing the progress from commencement to shortly before completion- anticipated 1932 of the re-building of Buckfast Abbey by the Bendictine Monks following the re-establishment of religious life at Buckfast in 1882. Probably sold to raise funds for the re-building the item is an interesting item of ephemera for today's visitors/supporters of the Abbey which is due to celebrate its' millennium in 2018.Although listed under the category of "post cards" they are in fact plain to reverse and not intended to be used as such but a souvenir. VG (Covers - a little shelf wear and soiling.

Published by an enterprising local bookseller and printer T.A Hills of Minster Place Ely for the use of visitors and tourists to the Cathedral, a feature of the item offered by us are the contemporary adverts to the rear of trades and establishments in the town, not least that of Hills wherein he displays the various "types" available to customers of his printing office. Contains chapters on the Conventual Buildings, Bishop's Palace and St Mary's Church. The book was revised enlarged and reprinted many times and ran to many editions but copies of the first edition are now quite scarce. VG (Book- recent cleaning and re sizing of engraved plates, new tissue guards and end papers and re sewn on two tapes, re backed with new cloth - original lost, restoration to one corner of boards and repaired marginal tear to one leaf of text.
