Translated from the French by Godfrey Adams and re edited by Arthur Taylor this diary first published in France in 1971 provides a graphic description of what it was like to live in the trenches with demoralized, unruly, mutinous men waiting in fear and degradation for the order to move into hideous danger and towards probable death. The diary concerns in 1916 (Lorraine,Somme & Verdun Sectors), 1917 (Vosges, Chemin des Dames and Vauxhaillon Sectors and 1918 (The Somme, Kemmel Sector in Flanders, and Occupation of the Rhineland). VG/Good (Book- No previous owner name or inscription. No notable defects. Dust Jacket- A little rubbed at extremities with associated colour loss and minor nicks and creases. Edited by Fletcher Pratt, then leading authority on American Military history and with an introduction by D.W.Brogan the book is essentially an abridged edition of Russell's Diary published under the title "My Diary North and South" maintained whilst observing the American Civil War as war reporter for the London Times Newspaper. The result is an absorbing, detailed, honest and penetrating chronicle - per Allan Nevins Columbia University rear flap fold review. VG/VG (Book- Mild foxing to fore edge of book block- extending to margin of half title page. No previous owner name or insc. No other notable defects. Dust Jacket- Minor colour rubbing to extremities and light foxing to white exposed edges of flap folds. Non price clipped. No other notable defects. In a removable proprietary protective sleeve).
