SIGNED Copy in Slip-Case.Black rexine leather effect cloth with white titles to spine and silver to front board in slip case with dust jacket. 295x235mm approx. Account of progress in powered flight since 1903 with particular emphasis on the contribution made by General Electric in aircraft turbine technology, research for the writing of which led to the establishment of an archive in conjunction with the General Electric Jet Engine Museum at the Evendale, Ohio Plant. The copy offered for sale is signed and dated by Sir Frank Whittle to the front end paper on the occasion of a dinner held in his honour by General Electric on 5th September 1982. Loosely laid in is a copy of the printed menue. Whittle is credited with the invention of the turbo jet engine and his experimental engine W-1X led to Britain's first jet flight with the Gloster E.28/39 in May 1941. Under the rather unimaginative pseudonym of Frank Whitley he also went to the USA in June 1942 to give counsel and advice in the development of the Bell P-59. Whittle eventually emigrated to the USA in 1977 and died in Maryland in August 1996. VG/Poor(Book- a little light rubbing to cloth at tale of spine.Note of thanks "to the ---- (a family)" for attendance at the dinner from presumably representatives of the hosts to which Whittle has added "and" and signed and dated 5 Sept '82. Dust Jacket rubbed and nicked at extremities with a long tear to top front panel - repaired with cellotape on reverse. Slip Case - rubbed with abrasion of 12x10mm to edge of end panel).
