TRANSLATIONS FROM THE GREEK ANTHOLOGY, MITCHELL, DAVID M.
8 MITCHELL, DAVID M. TRANSLATIONS FROM THE GREEK ANTHOLOGY
LETCHWORTH Privately published 1940 1st Edition Hardcover Very Good Poor Book
Blue cloth boards with gilt titles to front board. 190x130mm approx. 23 nos. pp. Although undated our researches on Copac reveal that the book was published in 1940. Short collection of prose and poetry translated and sometimes gleaned from the Loeb edition of the Greek Amthology and J.W.Mackail's"Select Epigrams from the Greek Anthology" to seek to take the Greek text and put it into English verse as an English poet might have expressed it had he had the idea first, whilst keeping it as close as possible to the literal translation. The book was printed in a limited edition of 150 copies and the type then destroyed and consequently is a scarce item. The copy offered by us for sale is no 60. The only copies we can find on the internet (non for sale) are held by Trinity College Dublin and at Cambridge. A subsequent paperback edition was published in 1965 but this too is not common.VG/Poor (Book- No notable shelf wear or soiling, No previous owner name or insc. Mild foxing mainly to prelim and last few pages. Remnants of original glassine jacket only). Please see our image of the actual book offered for sale. We are pleased to be able to offer the option of card payment at our website where additional images of the item may also be available.
