LONDON BLACKWOOD, LE BAS AND CO Hard Back VG
Twenty volumes Red Cloth boards with Red leather quarter binding with gilt decs and lettering to spine. Gilding to top and bottom edges and foredges of pages. A particularly attractive set of the complete works of Shakespeare Containing a life of Shakespeare and Illustrated from the paintings of great artists. There are also photos of actors and actresses contempory with the publication of this edition ie Sir Henry Irving,Beerhohm Tree, Genevieve Ward, Forbes Robertson, Mrs Patrick Campbell etc.The edition is edited by Henry N. Hudson and contains his notes and introduction used for the Harvard Edition. One of the attractions of this edition is that it contains two sets of notes; one mainly devoted to explaining the text, and printed at the foot of the page; the other mostly occupied with matters of textural comment and criticism , and printed at the end of each play. The vols are sound and free of other annotation or inscriptions. The boards are generally very clean and bright, a couple having slight damp staining to rear boards near edges max 20x60mm approx. The heads of about twelve vols and tails of three are also damaged, ranging from slight to significant. The damage to the heads is typical of them being carelessly pulled from the shelf by the heads and probably never having been treated with leather cream in their lifetime prior to my acquisition. Of those with the damaged heads six are significant with loss on the worst of these extending right accross the head ( 30mm) and down the spine (10mm). Two of the vols each at one time has had a loose plate which has been glued back into place and remain a little proud. The extreme corners of most vols have slight freying but bottom edges display little shelf wear. There is slight foxing to prelims and browning to endpapers.There are no other defects worthy of note. The damage described has I believe been fairly taken into account in pricing what nevertheless remains a handsome set and will be a gracefull addition to any library., CIRCA 1980'S

Rubbed with nicks and area of loss to top front panel extending around head of 20x90mm approx.Spine of wrapper faded - spine of book bright and clean.
