MACLOGHLIN, EDWARD PERCY PLANAGENET & ELIZA Nee MILLARD Ed DELIBERATE WRITINGS SOUTHPORT PRIVATELY PUBLISHED 1906 1st Edition Hard Back VG Mushroom Buckram Boards with gilt embossed lettering and decs to front board. xvii + 99 nos. pp + endpieces by editor. Frontis portrait of author with tissue guard + portrait of wife at end. Hand made paper and uncut pages,with presentation letter bound in signed and dated by his widow. With additional inscripion by her on ffep. Memoir and Writings of Macloghlin privately published by his widow. He was born in Wigan in 1855 and qualified and later practised in the town as a Surgeon. It appears he was an atheist and held strong views on a number of matters which were aired and the subject of letters published in the Wigan Observer and Southport "Visitor" even resulting in an appearance before the magistrates in Wigan when he and Eliza brought an action against a couple whom it was claimed had assaulted Eliza. Dr Macloghlin was so enraged at the nature of the questions in the cross examination of Eliza and the lack of opportunity afforded him in explaining his views in court that extensive reporting of this was also made in the "Visitor". VG (book- some light pencil annotations and underlining of passages by a previous owner who has noted 3rd reading Winter 1940-41 at end! Otherwise a sound clean copy with a little shelf wear to buckram at bottom front corner and gilt a little dulled). Price:
