Account of the affect of the hostilities on the Insurance company and it's staff during WWII. The booklet includes details of the precautions taken, damage sustained, casualties including roll of honour and decorations and medals awarded to staff. Published by Whitbread's Brewery in a series of books on Beer Brewing and Imbibing and called "The Whitbread Library" the first two published simultaneously were this book and "Whitbread's Breweryl". Together they form an interesting and informative history of the famous brewery it's inns in London and the South East mainly in Kent where it had it's centre of Hop growing and on the social history of drinking.Inns of Kent is Vol 6 in the series. Copies either presentation or complimentary have the name of the recipient on a bookplate pasted to the front paste down and bear the "Whitbread 1742 " Logo. Good/Good (Book- Shelf wear- colour loss to extremities of boards. Offset browning to ffep.Whitbread 1742 plate to front paste down with neat ink name and compliments slip loosely laid in. Short history of the Brighton force compiled by a then serving Inspector and published to mark the then imminent amalgamation of the five Sussex forces whereupon Brighton County Borough Police ceased to exist. It is possible it was issued to members of the Borough Police Watch Committee and serving members of the force only and did not go on general sale as it seems to be a relatively scarce item. At the time of listing we can find no other copies available to purchase or held by prominent UK libraries. Printed by The Southern Publishing Company Ltd "Argus House" North Street Brighton. Undated (1968) VG (A little light shelf wear to extremities of boards, previous owner name- PS62 to front free end paper. Some signatures a little strained but binding generally sound). Moderate to heavy foxing to endpapers and all edges of pages the face of the pages largely unaffected. The foxing also extends to the extremities of the boards. The dust jacket has moderate shelf soiling and some staining to the white rear panel - possibly leaching of colour from a red cloth book. Frontis plate with tissue guard New edition of a work substantially written by James Rice but incomplete at the time of his death and brought to press by Walter Besant, himself a respected writter and student of London's history. The story of Dick Whittington was largely rescued from legend, fleshed out and authenticated by the researches of Samuel Lysons who also proved the antiquity of the "Cat" story. The present work has much on the City of London and its' Charters, Companies and Guilds in the middle ages as well as numerous appendicies. The copy offered for sale also has articles simpathetically incorporated in the book by a previous owner including a picture of Whittington's house in Swithin's Passage , Moor-Lane a cutting from a periodical, obituary for Rev Prebendary Whittington Nov 1900 tipped in and other items loosely laid in. Good (Book- no jacket. Boards - a little faded and shelf worn but sound with general shelf soiling.Light foxing to prelims incl. tissue guard and title page. Paper of book block lightly tanned.
